Lead Instructor & Developer

HackerYou College of Technology

About HackerYou:

HackerYou was established in 2012 as Canada’s first programming bootcamp. Founded by the team that introduced Ladies Learning Code, HackerYou offers both part-time and full-time courses for people who want to learn to build websites, become a developer or become a better developer. Our courses are hands-on and project-based and feature a small ratio of students to instructors – usually around 10:1. We’re now a registered Private Career College and we serve over 1000 students a year from our 12,000 square foot space at Queen & Spadina.

But there’s one more thing that makes our courses the best out there: they’re led by industry-leading developers. Our instructors at HackerYou are some of the very best in the industry, and we’re looking for one more to join our team, to bring the number of people on our Bootcamp Instructor team to six!

About HackerYou’s Full-Time Front-End Development Immersive:

HackerYou runs four full-time web development immersive bootcamps per year. Each bootcamp has 30-35 students, and there are three instructors dedicated to each group. Our CTO oversees each bootcamp as well as our development projects, and when not resourced to bootcamps, our two additional Lead Instructors spend their time coding. (They also grade assignments, improve curriculum and help out as needed.) Classes run Monday to Friday from 10 am to 6 pm for nine weeks. We take a two- to five-week break between each bootcamp, which gives our entire Instructor team time to code, improve curriculum, take vacation, speak at conferences, and more!

We’re constantly revising the curriculum to ensure we’re teaching the latest and greatest. Here’s what we’re teaching, as of January 2018:

  • HTML5, CSS3 and responsive design
  • Precompiled syntaxes such as Sass
  • JavaScript fundamentals, jQuery and using APIs
  • Workflow automation and Javascript tooling with Gulp
  • React
  • Firebase
  • Version control and open-sourcing code using Git and Github
  • Paired programming & working in teams
  • Visual Studio Code
  • Best practices for modern web development
  • Website accessibility requirements

This is also generally the stack we use for HackerYou’s development projects, plus Node and MongoDB. We are also currently re-building the HackerYou website with Contentful.

We’re extremely careful about student selection (check out our Bootcamp Admissions Process at which makes teaching at HackerYou a treat. As a team, we judge ourselves based on two things: 1) Are our students happy? 2) Are our students ready for the careers they want? You can learn a bit about the students who have already graduated from our bootcamp program here.

Why This Role?

HackerYou’s Lead Instructors enjoy tons of variety in their roles – way more than the typical development position!
