Canada Learning Code is Canada's leading national charity championing digital literacy education. Placing a special emphasis on female, trans, and non-binary adults and youth, people with disabilities, Indigenous youth and newcomers, Canada Learning Code is proud to work from coast to coast to make sure that all Canadians have access to the knowledge they need to prosper in our digital world. Originally founded as Ladies Learning Code in 2011, the organization has evolved to run programming for adults, youth and educators through programs Ladies, Girls, Kids, Teens and Teachers Learning Code. Though 2020 has certainly gone differently than we expected it to, at Canada Learning Code we remain focused on our mission. Today, we are delivering live-online learning experiences across the country for adults, youth and educators. To date, Canada Learning Code has reached over 600,000 learners through an in-person experience.

We are looking for a mission-driven, experienced leader to join our team as a Director of People & Culture


In this role, you will lead and execute our People & Culture objectives, goals and strategies. In collaboration with our Senior Leadership Team and with the support of our People & Culture Coordinator, you will establish and execute CLC’s vision and mission, goals and strategies. You will ensure our largely distributed and remote team of 150+ individuals are engaged and productive. You will build and maintain a healthy and inclusive culture that aligns with our Organizational Values.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead organizational culture building strategies and uphold CLC’s values
  • Lead inclusion, and engagement strategies, including leading our D&I Task Force and rotating chair, team member networking opportunities, feedback strategies, and more
  • Manage and execute the recruitment program end to end, including developing job descriptions, postings, conducting interviews and liaising with hiring managers, ensuring equitable assessment practices
  • Ensure all aspects of HR Compliance (personnel records, employment insurance, labour relations, policies, health and safety)
  • Management and administration of org-wide systems and tools
  • Management of People & Culture and Payroll Budgets
  • Manage all HR policies including ongoing maintenance and continuous improvement to ensure relevance, accuracy and compliance
  • Support all employee (Team Member) relations matters
  • Manage the performance management program including professional development, recognition, training and review process administration
  • Lead and oversee Compensation strategy, including benefits administration oversight, payroll administration, and annual compensation reviews
  • Manage People & Culture Coordinator and oversee all job duties and responsibilities
  • Lead and support People Management engagement, training and development
  • Conduct monthly strategy and planning calls with Chief People Officer (on leave)
  • Prepare reporting to Board of Directors on all P&C highlights and metrics, lead Compensation Committee and Code of Conduct Committee

About You

  • You have proven work experience as an HR Leader (8+ years)
  • Deep knowledge of and experience in all HR functions
  • Experience in strategic planning and implementation
  • You have been a champion of Diversity & Inclusions strategy and have executed on organizational programs and initiatives that have made a marked difference in past organizations
  • You are fiercely passionate about engagement and building strong and healthy teams
  • You have knowledge of labor legislation (multi-provincial is an asset)
  • You have excellent verbal and written communication and collaboration skills
  • You are strong leadership and decision-making skills
  • You have excellent organizational skills and diligence, with an ability to prioritize important projects
  • You are able to use metrics and analytics to make data-driven decisions

Work Hours and Environment This is a full-time contract position from Aug 1 2020 to Sept 30 2021 to cover a maternity leave.

This role will work completely remotely until it is safe to return to our HQ office space - an entire floor at Queen and University (right around the corner form a subway station)! We have an open concept workspace, meeting rooms and a kitchen plus lunch room!

This role may require some evening and weekend work.

This role reports directly to the CEO.
